Historie

In 1992 vonden de toenmalige vrijwilligers van stg. O.J.C. JERA`70 (het open jongerencentrum in Ysselsteyn) het tijd dat er eens een openluchtfestival in deze regio werd georganiseerd. En zo geschiedde… Een paar hekken met zwart landbouwplastic, een aanhanger als podium, tafels als bar, flessen bier en JERA OPEN AIR was geboren. De vrijwilligers kregen de smaak te pakken en vanaf dat moment werd elk jaar met medewerking van de plaatselijke ondernemingen een festivalterrein uit de grond gestampt en een oergezellig festival gehouden.

Naarmate de jaren voorbij zijn gegaan, werden de vrijwilligers door ervaring wijzer en werd de organisatie steeds professioneler aangepakt. Nadat het festival in 1999 tijdens het optreden van Pater Moeskroen letterlijk in het water was gevallen, werd besloten om het anders aan te gaan pakken. De editie van 2020 werd helaas verplaatst naar 2022 vanwege de coronapandemie.

In 2001 heeft iedereen voor het eerst kunnen genieten van het resultaat: een sfeervolle festivaltent met openluchtterrein. Het festival werd dat jaar gedoopt met de nieuwe naam JERA ON AIR. Jera On Air is inmiddels flink gegroeid. Het terrein bestaat nu uit twee festivaltenten, de befaamde Punkbrockbar, een chill-area, een food court, signeersessies, een festivalmarkt en een camping. Het festival trekt elk jaar inmiddels meer dan 30.000 bezoekers.
